The first phase established the African Drought Monitoring and Advisory platform through the transfer and installation of drought web mapping technology from JRC to ACMAD. The system was deployed to support continent-wide monitoring of drought conditions using Earth observation, weather, and geospatial datasets.

African Drought Monitoring and Advisory Platform
The Mukau project supports the development and strengthening of the African Drought Monitoring and Advisory platform, a continental web mapping system hosted by ACMAD to monitor drought conditions across Africa. The platform brings together rainfall, vegetation, soil moisture, and climate datasets to help forecasters, decision-makers, researchers, and humanitarian actors understand drought risk and take timely action.
Implemented with support from JRC and partners, the project evolved through three major phases: installation of the drought monitoring platform, customization and development of new data and reporting capabilities, and integration of seasonal forecasting products to support anticipatory action.
Our Areas of Work
The second phase focused on adapting the platform to ACMAD’s operational needs. Work included database extensions, data processing scripts, user interface improvements, automated data ingestion, drought report generation, custom area-of-interest analysis, user registration, and notification functionality.
The final phase integrated seasonal rain and temperature forecasting into ADMA, including Copernicus-based forecast products, ACMAD forecast polygons, Unusually Wet and Dry Conditions datasets, and enhanced drought classes such as “Drought projected to persist.” This strengthened the platform’s role as an early warning and decision-support system. This phase also saw AI workflow integration with AI powered analytics and a chatbot integrated alongside bulletin generation sing AI workflow

Continental Drought Monitoring
Seasonal forecast products, including Copernicus and ACMAD forecast outputs, help identify areas where drought conditions may persist or intensify up to six months ahead.
Custom Reporting and Analysis
Users can generate drought reports at administrative levels, draw custom areas of interest, upload shapefiles, and access visual summaries for decision-making.
